The rendering is very good and (IMO) does a better job than Google Play Books. Its contents menu is also better. If it displayed page numbers, gave you the ability to add bookmarks and jump to a page or bookmark it would be a complete App. Regrettably without these it's of limited use as you have no idea where you are in a book, or how to get back there easily the next time you open it. However, if you just want to install the app on your own computer, you can do this yourself faster, without messing with any signatures. Windows 10 allows you to install apps without signing them if you’re installing an “unpackaged” app from a directory. To do this, open a PowerShell window as Administrator and run the following command.
To the best of my knowledge, the only way to open .pub files on a Mac is to convert the file to another readable format.
One way to do that is with Adobe Pagemaker through Classic.
Alternatively I believe pdfonline allows for free conversions. I haven't used it myself, but I have heard it works.

If you have access to a computer running windows, programs like 'deskPDF', or 'CutePDF' are programs that converts .pub files to .pdf files.
Or the better solution if you have a windows machine is to just go ahead and get Microsoft Publisher which will allow you to edit the files.
Lastly, there are rumours that Office 2007 might have some export tools that allow you move .pub files around more easily.
You might have better success if the person who created the .pub file saves it in another format. Perhaps EMF.

How to associate the file with an installed software?
If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.PUB) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected PUB file. From the drop-down menu select 'Choose default program', then click 'Browse' and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the PUB file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.

Many files contain only simple text data.
